Julie is a passionate advocate of Singing. Her conducting career has led her to work with choirs at all levels of ability, sizes and voice types. Notable posts include the Resident Vocal Coach for the prestigious London Oriana Choir, Choral Director of Northwood Choral Society and North Middlesex Federation TG Choir, Whetstone Ladies Choir and the leader of Harrow Choral Society’s Singing for Starters’ Programme. She has enjoyed a long and successful career as a professional Soprano in both opera and oratorio and has performed the vast majority of the great Choral works both as a soloist and chorister.
Julie was awarded an ARCM in Singing Performance from the Royal College of Music, whilst studying with Elizabeth Robson after gaining her first degree in Music/German from Oxford Brookes University. She also gained a PGCE from Goldsmith’s College, University of London. After graduating she continued her studies in classical singing and vocal pedagogy with the eminent vocal specialist Professor Janice Chapman and with Dame Josephine Barstow. She currently teaches advanced singers as well as being the Resident Vocal Coach for Harrow Choral Society. For the London Oriana Choir she worked on the Music Staff teaching individual lessons, giving workshops and master classes and being on the audition and vocal assessment panel.
Julie believes strongly in lifelong learning, she has studied conducting and choral direction with Manvinder Rattan and the Sing For Pleasure Charity and continues to study with Amy Bebbington, chief trainer of the Association of British Choral Directors. Her work as a Choir leader focuses on helping choirs develop and use the vocal technique necessary for Choral singing as well as learning how to sing well together, interpret the music by examining the Composer’s intentions, be storytellers and (very high on the agenda) have fun!
